Treatment
What is a Roof Treatment?A Treatment or Preservative should stop and retard the growth of bacteria. These include moss, fungus, molds, algae, lichen and also insects.A treatment should also have a UV inhibitor and should be a cedar oil blend. This will re-hydrate the shake with its natural oils and prevent dry outfrom sun exposure. There are a few treatments that provide all of theabove and some are better than others and are environmentally safe as well.
You may also be aware of color treatment, an orange or red tint on some roofs. Most companies are still using the canapsol colorant. A very red/orange pigment to color the shake to hide repairs. This color is below standard, cheap and blotches and fades quickly. If not used with a treatment that was described above it will feed the moss and increase algae growth.
Cloverdale paints manufacture a color pigment for roofs that does not blotch, fade or run! It is also made only for cedar shake unlike canapsol that was made for landscape timbers. It has a life of 7 years approx. before re-treatment is needed. Truly the best! We are able to provide any shade you desire! Even a slate grey color!
DO USE: A treatment that is labeled as a cedar roof treatment product and/or EPA registered as a wood preservative. A treatment should be a water repellant and UV inhibitor.
DO NOT USE: A treatment that makes outrageous claims, such as "lasts a lifetime". A treatment that is a sealant, waterproofer or plasticizer. This will cause the shake the inability to breath! Definitely do not use any treatment/preservative that contains unfortified linseed oil, diesel fuel, crank case oil or any chemicals that could cause fire damage.
Always ask your contractor what treatment will be applied and what the treatment contains! If they refuse to offer an M.S.D.S. (Material Safety Data Sheet) do not use the treatment!
All treatment used on your roof needs to be certified from the manufacture that it is solely intended for your shake roof. Many cleaners are making homemade treatments to save costs, but any home made treatment is not recommended since you do not know what ingredients are included. Also, many cleaners are using wood preservative for decks or other woods, which is also not recommended! All cleaning contractors shall use treatment from manufacturers that state "intended for cedar shake roofs".

*A word about self cleaning treatments* The name of the treatment ranges from RainShield, WeatherShield, Moss b' Gone, PyroShield, RoofShield and others. The truth about these treatments are they are not treatment at all! They are all caustic stripers! They are sealants and will cause your shake the inability to breath and will end up damaging your shake. The companies offering these treatments claim that by air cleaning your roof and applying one of these treatments will come clean over time. Sadly, the truth is that the chemicals in these products are extremely corrosive!
They have caused the following problems:
The story is told like this: "Never wash your roof again! By using water to clean your roof will destroy it. Use our product to clean and you will never have to clean your roof again!." It sounds great! It's got all the angles covered! But we have seen what becomes of roofs that are air cleaned and then have these products used! A 10 year old cedar shake roof that had a self cleaning product used was completely dry rotted from the inside out! You have seen these roofs before, they are the bright white shine roofs, this color is because of these products!
The Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau is a company that sets the standards and guidelines to the manufacturing of roofing products. They also set the quality and grading of shake materials. They set the standards and guidelines on how to install, repair, clean and maintain roofing products as well as the standards of RMT's (Roof Maintenance Technicians).
